Year 2 have been enjoying lots of super new activities and topics. All the children have settled in very well and have made a brilliant start to the new school year.
On Saturday 3rd September Miss Finn celebrated her wedding to Mr James Hunt at St James the Greater Church. Despite the rainy day the ceremony was beautiful with some lovely hymns and a choir. The children from 2JV ( last term) had made the bride a fantastic good luck charm which she wore on the day. The couple then went on to celebrate at their reception, held at Brooksby Hall, where the weather had improved, enabling some lovely photos to be taken in the beautiful surroundings. Later that evening many of her Stoneygate friends joined her to dance the night away!
Good luck for your future together Mr and Mrs Hunt.
Air Raid Shelter
Year 2 got to experience what a WWII Anderson Air Raid Shelter would have been like this week. We created one in the summer house using authentic posters, blankets, board games, newspapers, knitting and even rationed carrot biscuits.
What a lovely practical way to find out more about WWII life!
had an exciting time learning all about WWII life in Loughborough and looking at interesting artefacts.
Then we all excelled ourselves cracking very difficult spy codes!
Mythical Greek Creatures
We enjoyed creating our own ‘Chimaera’ Greek myth creatures. We used adjectives to describe them. The results were very impressive and beastly!!
Year 2 enjoyed data handling in their maths lessons this week. As one of our topics is WWII we used fighter planes as the focus for our tally charts. Then we transferred the information to block graphs and answered questions on the information we had collected.
On Monday it was Pet Day in Year 2. With pets scheduled throughout the day and lots of dogs visiting it became similar to an arena at Crufts! Thank you to all our lovely parents for giving up their time to bring in rabbits, fish, horses, dogs and even a cockatiel!
All the children were very excited to show off their super pets and well done pets –no puddles on the floor!!
Never work with children or animals!!!…. We do in Year 2!!
Well done to Year 2 for such vibrant and creative floor pieces in the Gym Display this year!
The use of chiffon and scarves really added to the eye catching routine. Thank you Mrs Cave!
Year 2 really enjoyed celebrating World Book Day. Everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters and we were amazed by the variety of wonderful costumes!
The children had a fun filled day taking part in story book literacy activities and listening to Mr Ashwin retelling The Flum Flum Tree by Julia Donaldson.
What a fantastic day!!
On Tuesday morning we were lucky enough to have a visit from ‘The Canal Explorers’.
David, Gill and Mike are volunteers from the Canal and River Exploreres Trust, who kindly give up their time to come into schools to work with children and teach them about canal life. The classes were split into two groups. With Gill and Mike they looked at canal boat artefacts and canal style clothing then with David they looked at maps and old pictures of people living on canal boats. David used a sandpit to demonstrate how and why canals were built. After break the children spent an hour following step by step instructions to create some of their own art work with amazing results!!
On Wednesday afternoon Year 2 were excited to welcome David from The Raptor Foundation with his amazing selection of birds of prey.
We enjoyed learning new and interesting facts about hawks and owls. David demonstrated how the birds fly. It was great to have a hawk swoop over our heads. The African Eagle did not feel like flying on Wednesday but the Barn Owl made up for it, he glided silently around the hall and let everyone hold him using a special glove.
What a fantastic treat and a brilliant learning experience!!
