Colts Soccer v Fairfield and end of season awards

On Wednesday the Colts played their final game of the soccer season, at home, against the traditionally strong opponents of Fairfield. They are fortunate enough to have around 130 boys in their Colts squad, compared to our 36.

Hence, we expected the A match to be tough and it was!  Fairfield scored within two minutes and looked very confident of getting more. However, after this early shock we settled and defended well. We looked dangerous on the break and to our delight we stole an equaliser. A powerful shot from Archie Go was parried away, but Fin pounced to smash a shot home. For a while we hoped it might be a replay of the Manchester United v Bayern Munich match, but it wasn’t to be. Fairfield got a lucky deflection to take the lead and in the last minute, as we gambled on getting an equaliser, they scored again to win 3-1.  When we discovered after the game that Fairfield were the IAPS County Champions we realised we had done well to stay in the match for so long.

In the B match it was widely acknowledged that our boys were the better team. We passed the ball beautifully and scored three goals, two from Alfie and one from Kian. Unfortunately, Fairfield also scored three to snatch a draw.

In the C match the boys produced one of their best performances of the term, but sadly they were defeated 0-2.

After tea the boys, parents and staff moved to the foyer for our end of season awards, in front of our new ‘Sport’ pop up display.

For the A team Fin won Player of the Season and Hotshot (for his 20 goals), Dom won Defender of the Season and Arjun won the Most Improved Player award.

For the B team Alfie was the Player of the Season, Matthew was Hotshot, Jack was Defender of the Season and Hugo was the Most Improved Player.

For the C team Kian won Player of the Season, Harry was Defender of the Season and Henry won Most Improved Player.

Earlier in the week Alex B was awarded D team Player of the Season and Henry T won E team Player of the Season.

Many thanks go to all the parents who have supported the boys throughout a very successful soccer season.

RUGBY COLTS A TEAM v FAIRFIELD – Wednesday 20th November 2013

The Colts A team consisting of Archie Gi (Captain), Fin F, Patrick B, Henry B, Thomas B, Dom A, Jamie B, Ed B, Henry V, Kian B, Arjun S and Henry W played Fairfield Junior School on a cold and wet day for Rugby.

Stoneygate met their match in this fixture but they did not give up the game without a fight. In the first five minutes Stoneygate should have scored twice but “white line fever” saw them go into contact when other players on their side had a clear run to the try line if only the ball had been passed. Good pressure from the Stonegate side only allowed Fairfield one chance to score which they took.

Half time score Stoneygate 0, Fairfield 7.

Knowing they were in a tight game the requirement was to be switched on from the second half kick off. This is where the game went away from Stoneygate as they allowed Fairfield to score three tries in the first five minutes of the re-start. To Stoneygate’s credit the team rallied and showed they were capable of playing well against such good opposition and scored a well deserved try through Patrick B. In addition, chances were created but the inability to move the ball wide and quickly meant they could not add to their score. Fairfield scored another deserved try in the last minute of the game and ended up with a win, which suggests Stoneygate were not in the game. This was not the case and the first five minutes of each half proved to be where they could have actually won it.

The team proved they can take a defeat well and they know how they can improve on their performance. Man of the Match went to Henry B who despite being one of the smallest players on the field tackled, rucked and mauled as well if not better than anyone.

Thanks to all the parents who braved the elements on this occasion and witnessed a good performance without the result this time.

Stoneygate Rugby Colts C Vs Fairfield Year 5 (B) – Wednesday 20th November

This was the second match of the term for Colts C. In the first half the team struggled to find any rhythm against a strong Fairfield team.

In the second half the team showed signs of improvement as they began to move the ball quickly through the backline. Standout performances from Karan, Alfie, Siddharth, Matthew and Alex should not go without mention in this tough fixture.

Although the game ended in defeat the entire team showed great character and determination once again.

Colts B Rugby IX v Fairfield School

On Wednesday the Colts B rugby team of Will.R., Will.H., Archie, Oliver.M., Spike, Oliver.H., Jack, Caspian and Hugo took on a large and powerful Fairfield team. The early plays suggested that this would be a tough afternoon for our boys as Fairfield had some very strong forwards. Thanks to some good tackling by our forwards Will, Will, Archie and Oliver we managed to keep the score down to 0-10 at half time.

However, in the second half, with the wind behind us, we rallied and saw more of the ball. Good handling and alignment allowed us to use our pace out wide. Tries from Archie, Caspian and Hugo, against one more from Fairfield, left the score at 15-15 with five minutes remaining.

The result hung in the balance, but two tries from Fairfield’s star forward outweighed our single try from Will.R.  Although we lost 20-25 this was a thrilling game that was decided in the final minutes and all the team deserve great credit for their courageous performance.
