Colts B v Warwick C Rugby

Colts B IX v Warwick C IX
Wednesday 8th October 2014
Home at Glen site

Team
Alex, James, George, Sidd, Matthew, Will, Max, Jack and Daniel

After a delayed start, due to thunder and lightning and a rain storm both teams produced a very entertaining game. The Warwick team included several very strong boys and before the match began it looked like we were in for a tough afternoon.
However, this was far from a one sided match and it was actually very close throughout. Warwick had the power, but their handling was poor and they kept dropping the ball. In contrast we handled the ball well and got our fast wingers into space.
Dan gave us a surprise lead. After a long period of defensive tackling we stole the ball and set him free to run over half the length of the field to score.
Warwick then used their power to score two tries. Just when it looked like they were getting on top both Matthew and Will scored excellent tries to give us the lead back. The last play of the first half lead to a Warwick power try.
So it was 15-15 at halftime.
Matthew, Sidd and Jack were brilliant at fly half, scrum half and centre. They constantly pressurised their opponents into making mistakes and they tackled well. Will and Dan defended well and looked dangerous when running at pace. Max tackled bravely on the wing.
Our forwards were equally impressive. Despite being repeatedly beaten in the scrum Alex, George and James put in a huge shift in defence. The ‘champagne moment’ of the match was one of the many tackles George made on an opponent nearly twice his size. Alex and James made lots of strong runs when we were in possession.
There was only one try in the second half and it was some quick thinking by our boys that allowed it to be scored by us. After two penalties to us, Alex tapped the ball and drove over the line.
Warwick had numerous chances to score, but they were stopped by our brave defending and their own handling. This left the final score as a memorable 20-15 win to Stoneygate.

Many thanks go to the Warwick staff for agreeing to bring a C team, which created a brilliant fixture and to all the parents that showed their support on the touchline.

Colts B Rugby v Brooke Priory

On Wednesday the Colts B team played their final rugby match of the season, away in Oakham, against Brooke Priory.

In pleasant conditions our boys began well.  With the absence of our two top forwards Will.R., Will.H. and Oliver had to step up to the job of tackling and they did very well.  Brooke Priory had two strong forwards and although we kept knocking them back they gave our opponents all the momentum in the first half. They scored three tries and led 0-15.

The second half was tighter and we had more chances to score. Despite the solid effort from Spike, Oliver and Jack in our backs we were unable to get the ball out wide quickly enough.  Brooke Priory scored two more tries to record a 0-25 win.

The scoreline suggests a one sided game, but we had lots of possession and created some good passages of play.  However, Brooke Priory were just a slightly stronger team.

The Man of the Match award went to Jack for his tackling effort and for his positional play.

Colts B Rugby IX v Fairfield School

On Wednesday the Colts B rugby team of Will.R., Will.H., Archie, Oliver.M., Spike, Oliver.H., Jack, Caspian and Hugo took on a large and powerful Fairfield team. The early plays suggested that this would be a tough afternoon for our boys as Fairfield had some very strong forwards. Thanks to some good tackling by our forwards Will, Will, Archie and Oliver we managed to keep the score down to 0-10 at half time.

However, in the second half, with the wind behind us, we rallied and saw more of the ball. Good handling and alignment allowed us to use our pace out wide. Tries from Archie, Caspian and Hugo, against one more from Fairfield, left the score at 15-15 with five minutes remaining.

The result hung in the balance, but two tries from Fairfield’s star forward outweighed our single try from Will.R.  Although we lost 20-25 this was a thrilling game that was decided in the final minutes and all the team deserve great credit for their courageous performance.
