Parents, please help your child to practise over the summer holidays. It is a great chance for them to have unpressurised time to play and explore new pieces. It is also important that children don’t lose the muscles, dexterity and confidence that they have built up. It can be very demoralising to have backwards in standard once September comes around. Consider making practice charts with rewards, using games like drawing names of pieces/scales out of a hat and setting a challenge to learn to play/sing Dad’s/Granny’s/Aunty Jane’s favourite piece. See if your child can teach you something! Don’t let holidays be a barrier to musical development – take the instrument (most are portable) or find an app that means that some type of practice can take place.

If anyone is still considering music lessons for their child, please contact me on lashwin@stoneygateschool.co.uk. We have teachers covering violin, flute, clarinet, guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, singing, drums and ukulele.

Marvellous Music Exam Results

P1000872

On Saturday 16th May, Stoneygate School was empty, but for some very smart singers, one pianist, one accompanist, one steward and an examiner. They were put onto a warm-up conveyor belt and then straight into their exam and did incredibly well. There were some very experienced candidates going in and some first-timers. The parents often seemed more nervous than the children, but all came out with very good results.

Congratulations to:

Spring Music Exam Results

The recent ABRSM Music Exam results have been very pleasing. The pupils had to go to The Holiday Inn in Leicester (a slightly bizarre location) and performed very well. There are a lot of super piano exam results and these are even more impressive when you consider that they are taken on a totally unfamiliar piano. Each instrument has a different weight, feel and height and the performer must adapt immediately to the new sound. All pupils who take music exams must work very hard to prepare for them – well done to everyone.

I must also highlight Mrs Jakeman’s achievement – grade 1 distinction on the piano!!

  • Jemima M – C – Grade 1 piano
  • Annabelle L – Grade 1 music theory
  • Clemmie P – Grade 1 music theory with merit
  • Milly B – Grade 1 piano with merit
  • Annie R – Grade 1 piano with merit
  • Millie P – Grade 1 flute with distinction
  • Evie S – Grade 1 flute with distinction
  • Will Mc – Grade 1 piano with distinction
  • Gracie F – Grade 1 piano with distinction
  • Mrs Jakeman – Grade 1 piano with distinction
  • Liana B – Grade 1 music theory with distinction
  • Ivana P – Grade 2 singing with distinction
  • Annabelle L – Grade 3 flute
  • Clemmie P – Grade 3 piano with merit
  • Hattie T – Grade 3 singing with distinction
  • Freya A – Grade 5 music theory
  • Georgina T – Grade 5 music theory
  • Georgina T – Grade 5 clarinet with merit

Many thanks to the parents for encouraging your children and supporting their practice and to the teachers for excellent preparation.

Music Exam Great Results

We have recently had news of some lovely music exam results from the Spring examining session.

Our pupils have all worked really hard and for many it was their first exam. I am very proud of them all for their achievement. Of particular mention, however, is Sam A for achieving his goal of two grade 8 qualifications before leaving Stoneygate School. Passing his clarinet Grade 8 exam with distinction is an incredible feat.

However, Music Theory Grade 5 is an essential exam to pass to progress beyond grade 5 in ABRSM instrumental and vocal exams. We have a great bunch of pupils coming to Music Theory sessions and doing really well. Their recent exam results are testament to their hard work.

ABRSM Aural Trainer App

We are currently running two ABRSM Aural Training sessions at school, today saw 9 members of 6MM desperate to improve their ‘spot the difference’ and singing back the melody skills (really!). There is a way to help practise all this at home – with the help of the ABRSM Aural Trainer app. It is only available for iPads, iPod Touches and iPhones, but should prove very helpful.

Image I would love to hear back from anyone who tries this app. It is possible to get 18 marks for the aural tests in an ABRSM and these marks can make all the difference!

Go to the ABRSM website for more details about the app – one less excuse for not practising now!
