About the School

Stoneygate is one of Leicester’s oldest schools, having been founded in the city in the nineteenth century. In 2003, the school moved its senior department from the city into purpose-built, modern facilities at Great Glen.  In 2016, we became part of the Leicester Grammar Trust.

Our primary objective is to provide a warm, happy and inspiring atmosphere, where every child is valued and enjoys coming to school

At Stoneygate we strive to engage pupils academically as well as socially, encouraging friendship and camaraderie between classes and year groups. Pupils have access to a wide array of subjects, all taught by our enthusiastic staff through innovative and engaging methods. Year 8 pupils take Common Entrance exams at the end of the year in order to progress to their next school.

Children can join Stoneygate from Reception onwards. We aim to create a safe and friendly learning environment, preparing the children for the eventual move to the site’s Senior School.

It isn’t all just hard work! Pupils at Stoneygate are able to express their creativity, too, with our art, music and drama departments.

Many take the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and can undertake ABRSM grade exams with the guidance of qualified instructors. For those who love to sing, our Junior and Senior choirs are a great way to get involved – the Senior Choir won the ‘Songs of Praise’ Choir of the Year competition in 2005.

Sport plays a large part in life at Stoneygate. All pupils are encouraged to participate in and enjoy sport; they have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of games and activities, such as rugby, hockey, soccer, netball, cricket, rounders, swimming and athletics. The children in Years 3 and above have Games lessons twice a week. All pupils, from Year 3 upwards, take part in matches against other schools.  On most  Wednesday afternoons all of the Senior children are representing the school. We have had national and county champions in recent years at individual and team level. Whether a child is a future county player or a keen novice, the school offers a caring and enthusiastic approach to sport.
