Well done to everyone who played in the Woodwind and Brass Concert yesterday. There was a lovely mixture of old favourites, jazz standards and new delights. It was particularly nice to see such a spread of ages in the performers and more ensembles than we have seen previously. We heard the following instruments: cornet, trumpet, baritone, trombone, fife, flute, clarinet, saxophone and descant recorder.
Following the success of the Recorder Karate programme in Year 3 and 4, it was very nice to hear all of the Year 3 and 4 involved in the concert playing Amazing Grace (brown belt) and then three of the most advanced Recorder Karate experts playing Mystical Bird (dark green belt).
We also heard our brass quartet and quintet playing so beautifully together. The performance of Haselmere was refined and controlled and the rendition of Tromba Tango demonstrated fun and rhythmic clarity and showcased the trombone fantastically.
Our fife players in Year 2 showed a lovely maturity in their performance and played very well together.
It is very hard to talk about the soloists without going into detail about every one of them, but I must mention Georgina T and her beautiful interpretation of Romance, by Edward German. As accompanist, I enjoyed it hugely and had one of those moments when I realised how lucky I am to work with such dedicated and talented young musicians.
Thank you to everyone who performed and all those who support our musicians at home in their regular practice and making sure that they have the right bit of music and instrument on the correct day in the appropriate place – not always easy!
