On Thursday 25th February, we took 20 instrumentalists to Uppingham School for their annual Prep School Orchestral Day. We had rehearsed all the music in advance, so knew what we were about, but very little can prepare the first-timers for playing with 375 other musicians. We had a top class day of rehearsing, eating, playing and performing.
The concert opened with Uppingham School’s Jazz Orchestra, which is led by Mr Webster (an old boy of Stoneygate) and includes Ollie T, who is also an old boy of Stoneygate (but a lot more recent!). It was great to see them both. The concert continued with the String Orchestra and we played Scarborough Fair and the overture from William Tell. We hugely enjoyed rehearsing with Mr Laing (Uppingham’s Head of Strings), who is highly entertaining and inspiring. The concert continued with the Wind Band playing Uptown Funk and then Happy. These pieces sounded fantastic and the performance was tight, energetic and full of fun. The conclusion of the concert was a medley of four numbers from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. This was performed by all the pupils as a full orchestra and it was great to be part of such a super sound.
It was lovely to see so many parents there and also great to have Mr Murphy there (not least because he kindly drove us home again!). I look forward to taking everyone back next year – I know we have pupils just starting out on their musical journey now, who will be ready to come next year, and pupils who came for the first time this year, who will now know the ropes.
Thank you to Mrs Thompson for all her help and all the children for being your normal, super selves!
