On Sunday 1st March the U12 girls played in the annual Oakham Netball Tournament.  It was a cold and breezy day, but the girls arrived with ‘fire in their belly’ and up for the challenge of a day playing netball.

We were first on and up against Swanborne Prep, Buckinghamshire.  The games were 8 minutes long so it was important to get a good start and be sharp from the offset.  The girls were on their toes and focussed and by half time we had settled in to the game and were ahead 3 goals to 1.  The team ran away with it in the second half and won their first game of the day 6-1.

With little time to spare Stoneygate were straight back on to face their second game of the day, against Oakham ‘A’ team.  Again we started sharply and maintained focus throughout. With speedy play and excellent movement it allowed Stoneygate to go ahead and win the game 4 goals to 1.

The third game of the day we thought would be our toughest challenge yet, as this was against Witham Hall.  However, this was not to be, as Stoneygate came out with all guns blazing and played their best netball to date. They interceptions, pressured their attack into making unforced errors and we converted all our goals, displaying imaculate timing when moving into space to win very comfortably 9-0.

The day was going well but I could sense the girls were tiring from their previous matches.  So the fourth game was all about maintaining their discipline in order to sustain their excellent form.  This was against St Johns College, Cambridge.  However, the girls stuck to the task and won the game 10-3.

The round robin tournament continued in the afternoon and with only one game to go, it meant that if Stoneygate won their last match they would be crowned  U12 champions.  However, even though this was within arms-reach nothing was certain until they played their final match. With emotions high and nerves of steel, true to their form Stoneygate played out of their skins to win their final game 7-3. Stoneygate U12 netball team had achieved their goal, they had won all their matches scoring a total of 36 goals and conceding only 8 goals throughout the whole day to be crowned The U12 Netball Champions of the Oakham Tournament, a marvellous victory.

Huge congratulations go to the girls, and very well deserved!  Also a special mention goes to Molly Johnson for also winning ‘Player of the Tournament’.  A fantastic day and one that I will remember as a very special achievement!netball photo

Well done to the whole team for your determination, commitment and effort.
