The Colts A team played in the Leicester City Football Club Under 11 schools tournament on Wednesday 11th February in the 3G Dome, at their training ground on Belvoir Drive. This was one of three tournaments taking place with the winners of each one playing each other for the honour of representing Leicester City at White Hart Lane – the home of Tottenham Hotspur.
The squad consisted of Alfie W (Captain), Kai W (Goal Keeper), Jack U, Hugo F, Matthew W, Edward B and Spike M. The tournament consisted of 14 schools split into two leagues of seven. This guaranteed six matches for each school with the top two teams in each league going on into semi finals and finals to decide the winner for the day. Below is a summary of the mornings play and as you can see we finished top of our group, winning 4 games, drawing 1 and losing 1.
The story of the league campaign was our mastery of the passing game where we moved the ball around the opposition with ease. One teacher likened us to Brazil the way we were passing the ball, but as Mr Feldmann pointed out to me in hope, not the Brazil that lost to Germany 7 – 1 in the World Cup!
One or two goals were conceded through a lack of strength in the challenge, but some of the passing moves were quite sublime and the football Stoneygate played was much in advance of the other schools. We won the league by two clear points and marched forward.
The semi final therefore loomed and having played extremely well to get there complacency was our only threat. The passing game continued and despite some good attempts on goal Stoneygate could not scored. At the other end our goalkeeper, Kai W, was making great saves. One in particular, when a thunderous shot simply hit him on the head and away for a corner. He did not flinch!
0 – 0 was the final score so the match was decided by a golden goal (first team to score wins). The opposition managed to do this with a speculative strike from the kick off. Our luck ran out and with it a chance to go forward towards the ultimate prize.
Many fine comments were made, especially from the Leicester City coaches, who were impressed with Stoneygate’s ability and composure on the ball and our passing.
The Man of the Match award could only go to the whole team, whilst the champagne moment (of which everyone had one) went to Kai W for the save with his third hand (his head!).
