Year 7 and the exploding jelly baby

Year 7 find out that when we respire, we release energy from glucose. We mimicked this in the lab by putting some potassium chlorate, an oxygen rich compound,  into a test tube, melting it, then popping in a jelly baby. The release of heat, sound and light energy was immediate and dramatic, as seen in this picture. Good job the process is a little more restrained in our bodies!
