COLTS A TEAM FOOTBALL V MAIDWELL HALL

The football started for the Colts A team with a trip to Maidwell Hall on Wednesday 14th January 2015. The weather looked like it was going to turn nasty during the morning but despite being cold the afternoon was perfect for playing football and on a great playing surface, was ideal for the A teams passing game.

The team consisted of Alfie W (Captain), Kai W (making his school debut in goal), Jack U, Max W (Making his Colts A team debut), Matthew W, Caspian E-G and Edward B.

As expected the Maidwell Hall team were very physical yet extremely fair and this seemed to have a bearing on the Stoneygate teams ability when in possession as they had less time on the ball. It was however, obvious Stoneygate were by far the better technical side and within the first two minutes their passing ability had created two wonderful opportunities to score. Two breakaways by Maidwell lead to two goals and despite looking the far better side Stoneygate were losing. This did not deter them from playing their passing game especially from the back and many more chances to score were squandered until Max W, on his debut hit a fierce shot first time leaving the goalkeeper helplessly beaten at his near post due to its power. Again it looked like it would not be long until an equaliser would be scored but sloppy defending at a free kick allowed a soft goal to be scored against the run of play.

Half time STONEYGATE 1 – 3 MAIDWELL HALL

The second half proved to be more of the same. A harmless shot from Maidwell somehow crept into the Stoneygate goal and at 4 – 1 it looked likely the team would not get the rewards they richly deserved from their performance. They, in true Stoneygate spirit, kept going and despite missing many more chances they scored. Matthew W weaved his way around lunging defenders to cross the ball for a group of Stoneygate players with an empty goal and Ed B put his foot through the ball for a well deserved goal. There was still time to pull the game around and many more chances came and went under a bombardment of the Maidwell goal, however it was not meant to be.

Champagne Moment: Max W for his goal

Man of the Match:       Alfie W for his ability to put his foot on the ball and pass even when under pressure
