Following their success at the South Leicestershire Area Sports, Stoneygate had 2 athletes who qualified for the Leicestershire County Championships. On Saturday June 14th Maddie and Finley represented South Leicestershire, competing against the other 8 areas of Leicestershire.
Maddie was selected for the U’13 100m and Finley for the U’13 High Jump. The Championships took place at Saffron Lane Stadium with the arena packed full of the best athletes in Leicestershire from aged 11 to 18, along with hundreds of spectators in the stand. What a superb experience for Maddie and Finley.
Maddie ran in the 3rd and final heat. To qualify for the final later that day she had to come 1st or 2nd or be one of the 2 fastest losers, out of 24 girls! – a tough qualifying task! Maddie’s race was fast and closely contested – the runners all crossing the finish line with very little between them. Maddie’s position of 7th does not quite do her performance justice as she sprinted well and held her nerve before and throughout her race. Her time was 15.04. Well done Maddie, you looked super in the purple South Leics vest! We shall miss you next year…
In the afternoon Finley competed in the high jump. After competing so well the day before, at Sports Day, and winning the Victor Ludorem, Finley was looking forward to using his stylish Fosbury Flop in this newly learnt event. As the competition progressed the rain began and the slippery surface didn’t help any of the high jumpers but Finley cleared 1.25m, achieving 3rd place and a Bronze County Medal. A super result! Watch out for Finley in the future at this event.
