On Friday, the Junior Choir (all of years 3 and 4) gave a lovely concert to various family members in the Hall. We began with a warm-up and demonstrated how we explore breathing and vocal sounds before moving onto songs that focus on concentration. The main part of our concert featured songs from around the world and heard the Junior Choir singing in harmony and using rounds. My personal favourite was Oh, won’t you sit down? a song from USA that featured great part singing. I think that the choir really took the meaning of the words and made them their own. Another song that really captured the mood was Rollerghoster, conducted by Mr Ashwin and featuring the kazoo from Mr Hudson. We also had songs from shows and spirituals, songs specially written for children and a traditional Congolese song. We sang a A Coat of Many Colours by Dolly Parton and finished with Rockin’ all over the world!
The choir sang with conviction and entertained the audience with the contrasts in sound and style. I was impressed by their stamina as they had to stand the whole way (apart from a brief sit down before the final song).
The Year 4 pupils will soon be auditioning for Senior Choir and we will continue to develop skills of harmony singing, accessing a range of vocal tones and communication in singing. If anyone is interested in singing lessons for their child, please contact me by email and I can give you details. Please be aware that spaces are limited due to high demand.
